Playa Morro Jable is a coastal bathing area located in Pájara municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach stretches for 1,178 metres with a width of 80 metres and features fine golden sand. The bathing area is situated in a protected wave environment with calm waters and a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The official swimming season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Coastal maritime water body. Length: 1,178 metres. Width: 80 metres. Bathymetry: 0 to –9 metres. Substrate: fine golden sand. Wave exposure: protected. Wave regime: calm waters. Tidal range: 1–3 metres. Situated in the ES70FVTII water mass (Punta Entallada – Punta de Jandía) classified as natural coastal surface water in good ecological and chemical-physical state.

Location

Morro Jable, Pájara municipality, Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain. Parking is available and in good condition. Pedestrian and vehicular access are both available in good condition.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public drinking water source with potable water supply. Showers, foot wash facilities, and toilets available. Disabled access in good condition. Waste bins, public telephone, bars, and changing rooms provided. Umbrella and sun lounger rental available. Medical attention available. No megaphone system. No lifeguard flags mentioned.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on analysis of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred 6–16 August 2018 and 26–29 July 2021. Identified pollution sources include: diffuse source from Morro Jable port, point sources from Morro Jable EDAR sewage outfall and EDAM desalination plant brine discharge, and surface runoff from Barranco del Ciervo and Barranco Valluelo de Los Burros watercourses.

Risks

Short-duration microbiological contamination episodes expected from: stormwater overflow from heavy rainfall (sporadic, lasting less than 72 hours); raw or treated urban wastewater (unexpected, lasting less than 72 hours); brine discharge from desalination plant rejection (unexpected, lasting less than 72 hours); accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste spillage from ship cleaning (unexpected, lasting less than 72 hours). Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
