Cala Cortina is a naturally occurring beach in Cartagena located on the Mediterranean coast within the Segura River Basin hydrographic demarcation. The beach stretches 250 metres in length with an average width of 15 metres and features a dark sand bottom composed of gravel and sand. It experiences a micromeridional tide of less than 2 metres and has a water renewal rate of less than 7 days. The beach is designated as a bathing zone and has been awarded the Blue Flag.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Length 250 metres, average width 15 metres, dark sand bottom, composed of gravel and sand. Water renewal rate less than 7 days. Micromeridional tide (less than 2 metres amplitude).

Location

Cartagena, Spain. Coordinates: UTM 678926.89, 4161491.84 (Zone 30N); Latitude 37.581258°, Longitude -0.974882°. The beach is situated in an isolated urban setting with a promenade present.

Facilities

Foot wash facilities (2 units with direct discharge to sand). Children's playground. No showers, no toilets, no changing rooms reported.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent during 2000–2009 and remained excellent in 2010 and 2011. No significant pollution pressure identified. No authorised discharges in the adjacent area. Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health; sampling in 2008 and 2009 showed negligible presence of potentially toxic cells. Wind-driven effects from Cartagena port may occasionally affect water quality. The water mass 'La Podadera–Cabo Tiñoso' has good ecological status.

Risks

Jellyfish appear seasonally with maximum abundance from early spring to late summer. Short-duration episodes are unlikely. Water quality may be affected by lower-quality waters from Cartagena port on windy days. Risk from toxic phytoplankton proliferation is null or very low.
