Platja Capellans is a sandy beach in Salou, Tarragona, located on the Mediterranean coast in a residential setting. The beach is flanked naturally by rocks on both sides and has high occupancy levels. It measures 200 metres in length with an average width of 49 metres and covers an area of 8,830 square metres. The beach features medium sand with a mean grain size of 0.31 mm and has a steep water entry gradient. The coastline experiences erosion at a rate of 0.9 metres per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass type: C29 Salou-Cambrils, sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Mean salinity range: 36.9–38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.8°C, July 25.3°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.4°C. Low hydrological response index. No permanent river or watercourse discharge; only surface runoff from rainfall. Predominant wind direction southeast, weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height 81 cm, mean period 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction east.

Location

Salou municipality (26,649 inhabitants), Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located between Platja Llarga and Platja de Llevant in the same municipality. More information available at www.salou.cat.

Facilities

Qualified beach inspectors (17 total) provide environmental monitoring and water sampling. The beach is part of the Catalan Water Agency's beach surveillance and information program.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring: weekly on Saturdays. Environmental monitoring: minimum 3 inspections per week for 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections conducted minimum 3 times per week. Beach is served by the Vila-seca/Salou wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and tertiary treatment. One emergency discharge outlet (Emissari Capellans) is located at the beach, 350 metres long at 11 metres depth. Water quality classification based on weekly analytical results.

Risks

Emergency wastewater discharge outlet located at the beach. Five emergency discharge emissaries in the area can be activated in cases of treatment plant failures.
