Cala Font is a small U-shaped cove located in the residential area of Cap Salou near the municipality of Salou in Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach has fine sand with a width of 23 metres and a length of 50 metres, covering a surface area of 2,235 square metres. The cove is naturally delimited by rocks on both sides and has moderate water entry gradient. Summer occupancy levels are medium.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body code C29 (Salou-Cambrils), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.6 to 38.5 psu. Water temperature: June 21.8°C, July 25.3°C, August 25.9°C, September 24.5°C. Significant wave height 81 cm with average period 5.24 seconds. Predominant wind direction SE with weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled.

Location

Salou, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located in the Cap Salou residential area. Parking information available through the Salou municipal website at www.salou.cat.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks: microbiological testing weekly on Saturdays, environmental inspections minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Monitoring is conducted weekly during the bathing season by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA).

Risks

Cala Font receives an emergency effluent discharge (Emissari Cala Font) with 500 metres length and 7 metres depth, which may be activated during sewage system failures. The bathing area is served by the Vila-seca/Salou sanitation system which treats wastewater from 42,076 inhabitants and equivalent population of 210,583 h-e. The area receives only surface runoff during rainfall, with no permanent or temporary water courses.
