Cala de la Buena is a small, naturally enclosed cove in El Perelló municipality in the Baix Ebre region of Tarragona, Spain. The beach is semi-embedded with moderate water entry gradient and is backed by residential development. It has an average width of 12 metres, a length of 58 metres, and a total surface area of 611 square metres. Summer occupancy levels are low. The cove is naturally bounded by rocks at both ends.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C32 (L'Ametlla de Mar–Conca Catalana de l'Ebre), a sandy, shallow water body with moderate continental influence. Salinity range: 30.6–38.4 psu. Average water temperature: June 22.4°C, July 26.1°C, August 25.7°C, September 24.6°C. Significant wave height 81 cm, average period 5.24 seconds, predominant east direction. Predominant sea state is rippled. Winds predominate from NW with weak intensity. Coastal evolution: 0.01 m per year. Sediment: very coarse sand with median grain size 1.12 mm. Hydrological response index is low. No freshwater discharge affects the beach.

Location

Located in El Perelló municipality (population 3,235) in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona province, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast facing southeast.

Season

First week of June to third week of September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) during the bathing season. Microbiological monitoring follows European Directive 2006/7/CE standards, measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental monitoring includes weekly water sampling and visual inspection assessing transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Monitoring is carried out for 17 consecutive weeks during the bathing season with minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections and weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays.

Risks

Potential risks include phytoplankton proliferations, jellyfish presence, and hydrocarbon contamination. The ACA monitors phytoplankton blooms from toxic species and has established management protocols to alert the public. Jellyfish presence is monitored and reported daily during the bathing season. Hydrocarbon detection triggers additional water quality analysis.
