Platja del Cap Roig is a sheltered beach in the municipality of L'Ampolla in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is naturally bordered by rocks on both sides and is located in a residential area. It has fine sand sediment with a moderate water entry gradient and experiences high summer occupation. The beach measures 300 metres in length with an average width of 30 metres and a total surface area of 5,976 square metres.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water within the Badia del Fangar bay, categorized as a bay with high continental influence. The hydrological response velocity index is low. Average water salinity ranges from 21.2 to 38.3 psu. Water temperatures are 22.6°C in June, 26.2°C in July and August, and 24.7°C in September. Predominant wind direction is northwest with light intensity. Predominant sea state is rippled. Significant wave height is 81 centimetres with a mean period of 5.24 seconds and most frequent direction from the east.

Location

L'Ampolla, Baix Ebre comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 3,118 inhabitants. Further information on the beach and its facilities is available on the L'Ampolla municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological analysis on Saturdays and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections evaluate water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetable remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. There are no freshwater inputs affecting the bathing area.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations of certain microalgae species can occur and are monitored during the bathing season. Most proliferations form only coloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers. Toxic species monitoring with management protocols exists. Jellyfish presence is monitored during the bathing season.
