Cala Montgó is a cove-type beach located in Torroella de Montgrí in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach measures 155 metres long with an average width of 52 metres and a surface area of 7,039 square metres. It has medium sand sediment and a very steep water entry gradient. The cove experiences high summer occupation and is situated in a semi-urban residential setting at the boundary between Torroella de Montgrí and l'Escala municipalities, adjacent to the protected Montgrí massif.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing area belongs to water mass C10 Rieres de Montgrí-Empúries, classified as a deep rocky type with low continental influence. Salinity range: 36.5–38.2 psu. Water temperature: June 20.3°C, July 22.9°C, August 22.6°C, September 21.3°C. Predominant sea state: calm. Wave height (significant): 0.61 m, average period: 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction: N. Low hydrological response velocity index. Continental influence level: low.

Location

Torroella de Montgrí municipality (11,441 inhabitants), Baix Empordà region, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located at the border between the municipalities of l'Escala and Torroella de Montgrí, in a residential area near the protected Montgrí massif.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control analyzes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspection of water transparency, coloration, floating human debris, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) operates surveillance and cleaning programs, including daily aerial inspection and floating debris collection.

Risks

The area is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferations that may affect bather safety and marine ecosystems. Jellyfish presence is monitored. In most cases, algal blooms only form discoloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers. Toxic species detection triggers a management protocol and public warning system.
