Platja de Riells is a sheltered urban beach in L'Escala municipality, located at the edge of the urban core and protected from open sea by a bay. The beach has high occupancy during summer months. It is a confined sandy beach with medium sand sediment, measuring 582 meters in length and 54 meters average width. The beach has a very steep water entry gradient and experiences erosion at a rate of 0.17 meters per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass classifications C9 and C10. The bathing zone has a low hydrological response velocity index. A channelized stream discharges at the central area of the beach only during heavy rainfall. Average water temperatures: June 20.3°C, July 22.9°C, August 22.6°C, September 21.4°C. Salinity range: 32.0–38.1 psu. Predominant sea state: flat. Average wave height: 0.61 m, average period 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction N. Predominant winds: E direction, weak intensity. Moderate continental influence.

Location

L'Escala municipality in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalunya, Spain. The beach is located at the northeast end of L'Escala town, bordered to the northwest by a promenade and to the northeast by L'Escala port. L'Escala town has 10,497 inhabitants.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly during the bathing season (June to September) by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). Monitoring evaluates microbiological quality using fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus. Annual classification determined using statistical analysis of monitoring results from the last four bathing seasons, with four quality categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, Insufficient, as defined in Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007.

Risks

A channelized stream from Rec del Molí discharges at the beach and carries water only during heavy rainfall events.
