La Platja is a small enclosed beach located in the centre of L'Escala, a municipality of 10,497 inhabitants in Alt Empordà comarca, Catalonia. The beach is 103 metres long with an average width of 19 metres and a surface area of 2,194 square metres. It is bounded to the west by a rocky outcrop and to the east by a car park wall. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Beach type: enclosed. Sediment: very coarse sand (D50 grain size = 1.21 mm). Water entry slope: very steep. Average water temperature: June 20.1°C, July 22.7°C, August 22.4°C, September 21.2°C. Mean salinity range: 33.2–38.5 psu. Significant wave height: 0.61 m with average period of 5.82 seconds. Prevailing sea state: calm. Predominant wind: weak northerly.

Location

L'Escala, Girona Province, Alt Empordà comarca, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in the urban centre of L'Escala municipality.

Season

June to September. Fortnightly monitoring and quality assessments are conducted during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) under Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring includes analysis of faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Annual quality classification is determined using statistical analysis of the last four bathing seasons. The beach receives no input from natural surface water sources, either permanent or temporary.
