Calahonda is a 3.34 km long beach in Mijas, Andalucía, located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach features dark sand and shallow waters with calm bathing conditions. It is situated in a semi-urban area with high occupancy and is designated as a protected zone classified as a Site of Community Importance (LIC).

Mediterranean coastal water body with shallow waters. Average beach width of 20 meters. Micromareal tidal range (0-2 m). Sandy substrate. Current regime dominates toward the northeast. Wave exposure is moderate, with dominant waves from the east and east-southeast associated with levante wind.

Location

Mijas municipality, Málaga province, Andalucía. Access is available on foot or by car. The nearest sports port is Puerto Cabopino.

Classified as Excellent for all monitoring seasons 2012-2015. Low risk of short-duration microbiological contamination. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation. A treated urban wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Cala de Mijas) is identified as a point pollution source.

Risks

Low microbiological risk of short duration (24 hours) from diffuse sources including land uses, built surfaces, and altered areas in the influence zone, and from the Arroyo de Calahonda watercourse.
