Calas Occidentales is a natural coastal bathing water located in Nerja, Málaga, in the Andalusian Mediterranean. The beach is 440 metres long with a mean width of 20 metres, composed of dark sand and subject to moderate wave conditions. It is an urban beach with high occupancy, situated in the Mediterranean Sea within the Rincón de la Victoria - Límite PN de Acantilados de Maro water body.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean water influenced by Atlantic waters. Deep waters with mud and sand substrate. Micromareal range (0–2 m). Dominant currents towards the northeast. Moderately exposed to waves, with dominant wave regime from the east and east-southeast associated with levante wind.

Location

Nerja, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. Easy pedestrian access to the beach. Marked with signage.

Facilities

Showers available. Rubbish bins present. Cleaning service operational. Pedestrian walkways and seafront promenade available. Disabled access provided. No lifeguard equipment. No Red Cross post. No toilets.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent in 2014, 2015, and 2016, and good in 2013. Monitoring carried out by D.G. de Planificación y Gestión del D.P.H. (Consejería de Medio Ambiente y Ordenación del Territorio) and health authority S.G. de Salud Pública y Consumo (Consejería de Salud). Short-term microbiological contamination risk is low.

Risks

Low risk of jellyfish proliferation. Low risk of phytoplankton proliferation. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation. Diffuse pollution source from land uses, built surfaces and altered surfaces in the influence zone.
