Playa La Caleta is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 50 meters long and 10 meters wide, with a sandy and rocky substrate. The water body is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 meters and depths ranging from 0 to 40 meters. The beach is situated in a natural coastal water mass classified in good ecological status.

Location

Playa La Caleta is located in the municipality of Valverde on the island of El Hierro in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian access and good vehicle access, with a maritime promenade and parking available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on microbiological indicators Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci evaluated over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The coastal water mass is in good ecological and physicochemical status. One microbiological contamination episode occurred from 18–20 September 2017 of short duration.

Risks

Two identified pollution point sources: pool water discharge (saltwater) and La Caleta wastewater treatment plant. Barranco de Tejeteica watercourse discharges to the area. Risk events include: sporadic stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall; unpredictable raw or treated urban wastewater; sporadic saltwater from pools with disinfection and filter cleaning. Phytoplankton proliferation episodes of cyanobacteria Trichodesmium recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
