Playa El Tamaduste is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 150 meters long and 8.6 meters wide, with a substrate of dark sand and rock. The water is characterized by moderate wave action and calm waters, with a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The beach is exposed to waves and located near the town of Tamaduste in the municipality of Valverde.

Water

Coastal water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −4 meters. Tidal range is 1–3 meters. Wave exposure is moderate with calm to moderately rough seas. Substrate consists of dark sand and rock. The water mass is classified as ES70EHTI - Roque del Barbudo – Punta de los Saltos (natural coastal surface water).

Location

Playa El Tamaduste is located in Tamaduste, municipality of Valverde, on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian access is good; vehicle access is regular. Parking is available but in poor condition.

Facilities

Showers available. Pedestrian access is good. Trash bins available. Parking available (poor condition). No public water fountain, foot rinsing area, changing rooms, bars, public telephone, megaphone, umbrella rental, awning rental, or lounger rental. No lifeguards or medical services.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) evaluated over four years according to Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physical-chemical) with overall good or better status. Contamination episodes occurred on 15–22 October 2018 (diffuse microbiological contamination from exceptional circumstances) and 31 August–2 September 2020 (short-duration microbiological contamination).

Risks

Wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Tamaduste) is identified as a point source of contamination. Short-duration contamination risks include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall carrying contaminants, and untreated or treated urban wastewater from pipe ruptures, sewage network failures, overflows, emergency releases, or unauthorized discharges. Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
