Playa Timijiraque is a 350-metre long coastal bathing beach located on the island of El Hierro in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has a width of 20 metres and features dark coarse sand substrate. The water body is exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1–3 metres and currents typical of the Atlantic coastal waters. The beach is situated in a naturally good ecological state according to the Water Framework Directive assessment.

Coastal marine water body classified as ES70EHTI - Roque del Barbudo – Punta de los Saltos (natural coastal surface water). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −15 metres. Substrate is dark coarse sand. Water body is exposed to moderate wave action.

Location

The bathing zone is located in Timijiraque, municipality of Valverde, island of El Hierro, Canary Islands. Pedestrian access is good, vehicle access is good, and parking is available and in good condition. Disabled access is available but rated as regular quality.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on analysis of faecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci collected over four years in accordance with Royal Decree 1341/2007. The water body is in good or better ecological status.

Risks

Potential episodic contamination from stormwater runoff generated by heavy rainfall carrying possible contaminants from upstream areas. Potential contamination from raw or treated urban wastewater (damaged sewage pipes, treatment failures, emergency overflows, unauthorized discharges). No risk identified from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk identified from macroalgae. Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) were recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No previous contamination episodes documented.
