Carranques Beach is a 220-metre-long natural sandy beach in Perlora, Asturias, located in northwestern Spain along the Cantabrian coast. The beach has a width of 40 metres and experiences macrotidal conditions with tidal ranges exceeding 4 metres. Water quality has been classified as excellent for bathing in recent years, with very low contamination risk.

Water

Coastal water body with golden sand composition. Length 220 metres, width 40 metres (highly variable). Water renewal time is less than 7 days. Mean wind speed 5.24 metres per second. Current direction: west-northwest. Wave conditions: moderate. Macrotidal regime with amplitude greater than 4 metres.

Location

The beach is situated near the urban centre of Perlora in the municipality of Carreño, Asturias. Parking is available with over 100 spaces accessible by road. Pedestrian access is good.

Facilities

Lifeguard services, toilets, showers. Disabled access available. Pedestrian access good and road access available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Microbiological sanitary parameters show excellent results at monitoring point PM1. Risk of insufficient water quality is very low. The beach does not present significant contamination sources in its immediate surroundings except those derived from sanitation of adjacent tourist complexes.

Risks

Historical oil spill of unknown origin. Fuel spill incident in 2012 from a thermal power plant rupture resulting in bathing prohibition. Local sanitation discharge from adjacent tourist complexes can cause short-duration contamination episodes (low risk). Jellyfish presence during spring-summer months, including Portuguese man o'war and other species, with recorded incidents in summer 2008 and exceptional occurrences in summer 2012. Microalga and cyanobacteria proliferation risk: null. Macroalga proliferation risk: low, associated with natural phenomena during storms. Dredging discharge 940 metres away with risk of short-duration turbidity increase.
