Playa de la Palmera is a coastal bathing beach located near the urban centre of Candás in Carreño, Asturias. The beach is 240 metres long with a width of 40 metres and consists of golden sand. Water quality was classified as good in 2014 and 2015, improving to excellent in 2016 and 2017. The beach has been awarded the Blue Flag distinction. The main potential contamination source is the nearby port of Candás, though the risk of insufficient water quality is assessed as low.

Water

Coastal water body in the Western Cantabrian hydrographic district. Length 240 metres, width 40 metres (highly variable). Golden sand composition. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Mean wind speed 5.24 m/s. Current direction west-northwest. Macrotidal range exceeding 4 metres. Moderate wave conditions. High occupancy level.

Candás, Carreño municipality, Asturias, Spain. Parking available with 50–100 spaces. Good pedestrian access and road access.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as good in 2014–2015 and excellent in 2016–2017. Microbiological testing conducted at sampling point PM1. Risk of contamination is low. No historical contamination episodes documented except for a 2012 fuel spill from a thermal power plant rupture that led to bathing prohibition in several beaches of Carreño municipality.

Risks

Candás port located 280 metres away is a diffuse contamination source. Short-duration contamination episodes possible from port waste including oily discharges, odours, and introduction of foreign species. Risk assessed as low. Microalga and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is low. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low, occurring naturally during storms. Jellyfish presence occurs occasionally during spring–summer months with low frequency; species include Portuguese Man o' War (Physalia physalis), Velella (Velella velella), Sea Pink (Pelagia noctiluca), and Moon Jellyfish (Aurelia aurita). Risk of jellyfish proliferation episodes is low.
