Playa El Castillo is a 200-meter-long, 35-meter-wide coastal beach located in El Cotillo, La Oliva municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has golden sand with boulders and gravel substrate, and is exposed to strong wave activity with a tidal range of 1–3 meters. It offers basic facilities including lifeguards and first aid services, with easy pedestrian access and vehicle access available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70FVTI2 is in good ecological status with good or better overall state. No previous contamination episodes are recorded.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: El Cotillo fishing port. Point pollution sources: residential wastewater discharge (two locations), wastewater treatment plant overflow, cafeteria discharge. Potential short-duration contamination: raw or treated urban wastewater (broken pipelines, treatment system failures, emergency overflows, unauthorized discharges) and accidental hydrocarbon spills, organic waste, ship cleaning. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
