Playa La Concha (Chica) is a 200-meter-long, 60-meter-wide coastal beach located in El Cotillo, La Oliva municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach features white sand substrate and is exposed to wave action. The water body is a natural coastal surface water mass classified as being in good ecological status. The beach is monitored for bathing quality from February 1 to November 30 each year.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year analysis of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to RD 1341/2007. The coastal water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with a total state of good or better. No previous contamination episodes recorded.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: El Cotillo fishing port. Point pollution sources: two wastewater treatment plants (Apartamentos Cotillo Lagos and El Cotillo), sewer relief outlet, two residential discharges, and cafeteria discharge. Possible short-duration contamination from untreated or treated urban wastewater and accidental hydrocarbon spills. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
