Platja d'es Codolar is a small beach in Tossa de Mar, Girona, located between a rocky hill topped by Tossa castle and an extensive stretch of rocks and cliffs. The beach is enclosed between natural features and has medium occupancy during summer. The beach covers 696 square metres with an average width of 19 metres and a length of 33 metres.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is part of the water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as a deep rocky type with low continental influence. Average water temperature ranges from 20.0°C in June to 23.8°C in August and September. Average salinity ranges from 36.6 to 38.4 psu. Predominant sea state is rippled. Prevailing wind direction is East with weak intensity. The beach does not receive any natural water course, temporary or permanent.

Location

Located in Tossa de Mar, a municipality in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated at the southern edge of the urban area of Tossa de Mar, between the castle hill and extensive rocky outcrops. Tossa de Mar has 5,845 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring includes 17 consecutive weeks of microbiological testing (weekly on Saturdays) and a minimum of 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under the European Directive 2006/7/CE framework. Microbiological control includes testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci on a weekly basis. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The wastewater from Tossa de Mar is treated by a biological and tertiary treatment facility (EDAR) with a maximum capacity of 4,500 cubic metres per day, serving 5,662 residents with an equivalent population of 26,250 inhabitant-equivalents. The treated effluent is discharged directly into the sea in a rocky area west of the beach.

Risks

The beach monitoring programme includes surveillance for phytoplankton proliferations, which are natural phenomena that can occur frequently in summer. Most proliferations form only coloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers. Jellyfish presence is monitored. The Catalan Water Agency maintains aerial surveillance and cleaning vessels for the prevention and improvement of water quality.
