Platja de Tossa is a narrow beach in the fully urban setting of Tossa de Mar in Catalonia, Spain. It is 354 metres long with an average width of 74 metres and a total area of 28,504 square metres. The beach is bounded to the north by rocky outcrops continuing towards Platja de la Mar Menuda and to the south by the Riera de Tossa river mouth and the castle-topped hill. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Mediterranean Sea. Water body classification: C14 Begur-Blanes, rocky deep water with low continental influence. Average salinity 36.8–38.4 psu. Average water temperature: June 19.9°C, July 23.0°C, August 23.8°C, September 22.5°C. Significant wave height 0.87 m, mean period 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. Predominant sea state: rippled. Predominant wind direction: East, weak intensity. Coastal line evolution: -0.16 m/year. Hydrological response velocity index: high.

First week of June to third week of September.

Water Quality

Water quality classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring: weekly analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring: minimum 3 inspections weekly assessing transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Monitoring period: 17 consecutive weeks. Responsible authority: Catalan Water Agency (ACA).

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place to detect toxic species. Protocol available for management measures and public notification if toxic phytoplankton detected. Riera de Tossa is the only natural freshwater stream discharging to the bathing zone almost year-round, except during drier summer months.
