Mar Menuda is a narrow, enclosed beach located at the northern edge of Tossa de Mar in Girona, Catalonia. The beach is 157 metres long with an average width of 32 metres and covers a total area of 5,988 square metres. It is bordered to the north by cliffs and to the south by rocky outcrops. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Belongs to water mass C14 (Begur-Blanes), a deep rocky type with low continental influence. Mean water temperature ranges from 20.0°C in June to 23.9°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 37.1 to 38.5 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.87 metres with a mean period of 5.55 seconds.

Location

Tossa de Mar, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated at the northern edge of Tossa de Mar village in a semi-urban setting. It is bordered by cliffs to the north and rocky areas to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental control is performed a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times per week, evaluating water transparency, coloration, suspended solids, marine vegetation, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The beach receives no natural water inflow from permanent or temporary water courses. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored and may occasionally occur as a natural phenomenon. The coastal zone has a high hydrological response velocity index.
