Maritime coastal zone in the Cantabrian Sea (Cantabrian hydrographic district). The monitoring point is located at UTM coordinates 450529 (X) and 4816584 (Y) in UTM zone 30.

Location

Bareyo, Cantabria. Accessible by car via the CA-141 road. Interurban bus service available. The nearest hospital is Valdecilla, located 25 kilometres away. Santander port is the nearest sports port.

Lifeguard equipment present. Red Cross post available. Rescue equipment on site. Showers available. Waste bins provided. Cleaning service in operation. Access signalling present. Disabled access available. Coastal promenade present. No blue flag. No telephone booth. No lifeguard flags.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent in 2015, 2016, and 2017 according to annual bacterial contamination percentiles. Chlorophyll 'a' concentration in the coastal water station is approximately 2.5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density is very low, below 5,000,000 cells/l. High risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CEE exists due to wastewater discharge impacts.

Risks

The wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) discharge in Ajo presents a high contamination risk to nearby Cuberris beach water quality. During rainfall periods, bacterial concentrations exceed regulatory limits. Continuous discharge from the EDAR of Ajo and random discharge from Cuberris beach occur. Systematic failure of the EDAR could result in degradation of current water quality ratings.
