It experiences strong wave conditions and is classified as a maritime coastal bathing zone. The beach has medium occupancy and is situated in an isolated urbanization area.

Water

Maritime coastal water body in the Cantabrian Sea. The beach is 150 metres long with an average width of 100 metres. Strong wave conditions are present.

Location

Ribamontán al Mar, Cantabria. Access is by car via the CA-440 road. Parking is available with over 100 spaces. The nearest city is Santander, approximately 30 kilometres away.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Showers available. Telephone service present. Waste bins provided. Signage present. First aid equipment (Cruz Roja) available. Local police present. No toilets. No disabled access. No beach umbrellas or lounger rental. No kiosks. No nautical club.

Water Quality

In 2011, the bathing water was classified as Excellent under Directive 2006/7/CE. Chlorophyll 'a' concentration in the Galizano estuary is below 5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous and very low, below 5,000,000 cells/l. Coastal water station chlorophyll 'a' concentration is around 2.8 µg/l.

Risks

High risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE due to diffuse agricultural and livestock pollution and discharge from the Galizano wastewater treatment plant (EDAR).
