La Arena is a 100-metre-long bathing beach in Arnuero, Cantabria, with an average width of 40 metres. The beach has golden sand and moderate wave conditions. It experiences medium occupancy and is situated in a semi-urban area. The beach is accessible by car via the CA-141 road.

Coastal maritime bathing zone in the Cantabric Sea. The water body is part of the Cantabrico hydrographic basin.

Location

Arnuero, Cantabria. Accessible by car via the CA-141 road. Interurban bus transport available. No parking facilities on-site. The nearest hospital is in Laredo, 20 kilometres away.

Facilities

Showers, lifeguard services, rescue equipment, red cross post, local police, signage, waste bins, telephone access. No accessible facilities for disabled visitors, no beach umbrellas or deckchairs for hire, no kiosks, no nautical clubs or water sports equipment rental.

Water Quality

Water quality classification (2005–2011): Good (2005, 2007, 2008), Excellent (2006, 2009, 2010), and Sufficient (2011). Monitoring point coordinates: UTM 453394.28 (X), 4817114.79 (Y). Medium risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CE due to the influence of the Meruelo wastewater treatment plant discharge.

Risks

Three identified discharge points: municipal sewerage from Meruelo (continuous urban discharge), Bareyo campsite discharge (continuous urban), and Meruelo wastewater treatment plant discharge (continuous urban, last inspected 28 December 2010). Chlorophyll 'a' concentration in Ajo estuary is below 5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with very low densities below 5,000,000 cells/l.
