Blanes Beach is an urban sandy beach located in the municipality of Blanes in the La Selva region of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 610 metres long with an average width of 44 metres and covers an area of 26,170 square metres. It is bordered by the Port of Blanes to the north and the Palomera rock formation to the south. The beach experiences high summer occupation and is situated in the Mediterranean Sea.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach belongs to water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as rocky deep type with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 37.2 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures average 20.1°C in June, 23.0°C in July, 23.9°C in August, and 23.0°C in September. Mean wave height is 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds. Sediment consists of very coarse sand with a median grain size of 1.15 mm. Water entry gradient is very steep. The coastal line evolution rate is 0.02 metres per year.

Location

Blanes, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the municipality of Blanes, which has 107,000 inhabitants, and is bounded by the port of Blanes to the north and the Palomera rock to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control includes weekly testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating human debris, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to water body C14 with low continental influence.

Risks

The beach receives permanent freshwater input from the buried Blanes stream, which discharges at the right end of the bathing zone. A phytoplankton monitoring programme has been in operation since 2000 to detect potentially toxic algal blooms. An emergency wastewater discharge system via the Sabanell submarine outfall (located at neighbouring Sabanell beach) can occasionally discharge treated effluent into the sea during exceptional circumstances.
