Santa Cristina beach is located in the municipality of Lloret de Mar in Girona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is a semi-natural and residential setting with an average width of 32 metres and a length of 310 metres. It has a steep water entry gradient and coarse sand sediment. The beach is bordered to the north by a rocky coastline and to the south by Treumal cove. Summer beach occupancy is high.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body classification C14 Begur-Blanes, a deep rocky type with low continental influence. High hydrological response velocity index. Average salinity range 37.3–38.4 psu. Average water temperature: June 20.1°C, July 23.2°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.2°C. Predominant wave height 0.69 m with average period 6.2 seconds. Predominant winds are weak from the east. Predominant sea state is flat. General circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with a current parallel to the continental coast and a current towards the northeast.

Location

Lloret de Mar, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located in La Selva region. The beach is situated in a semi-natural and residential environment with sports facilities from a hotel nearby.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control occurs weekly. Environmental inspection occurs a minimum of three times per week during the 17-week consecutive monitoring period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach does not receive direct discharge from any natural watercourse, only surface water runoff during heavy rainfall through two large ravines.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation is monitored and controlled under a dedicated program. The presence of hydrocarbons and other harmful substances is monitored, and toxic substance analyses are conducted when necessary.
