Playa Mar Azul is a bathing beach located in Torrevieja, Alicante, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has an irregular open configuration with a shoreline length of 1,016.9 meters and average width of 29.5 meters. The beach is composed of rocks and gravel with a low-erosion coastline and does not have defensive structures or a seafront promenade.

Water

Coastal marine water body in the Segura Hydrographic Demarcation. Water mass code: CW Coastal. Coastal category with typology 6. Micromareal tidal range. Current direction flows from south to north. Annual precipitation in the influence zone is 246 millimeters, with the wettest month in April and driest in July.

Location

Torrevieja, Alicante, Valencian Community, Spain. The beach is bordered to the north by Playa Los Náufragos and to the south by Playa Cala Piteras. Parking is available. Access is available but not adapted for disabled persons.

Facilities

Lifeguards and rescue services available. Public toilets available free of charge and at beach bars. Free showers and foot-wash facilities not available. Parking available. Beach bars present. Buoys and marking systems in place. Low bather density during bathing season.

Water Quality

Water mass status classified as Good. Monitoring conducted weekly during bathing season with assessment of visual inspection parameters, water appearance, and sand cleanliness using classifications of Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient. No direct discharges to the coastline affect water quality. No environmental control point (PCA) has been established as direct discharge or urban sewerage connections do not pose a risk.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risk factors identified with low frequency and minor impact: rainfall events, urban sewerage, and coastal discharges. Rivers/canals, industrial installations, port facilities, and diffuse pollution all present with low frequency and minor impact. No cyanobacteria episodes detected in the Valencian coastal area. Phytoplankton proliferation possible in areas with low water renewal. Jellyfish blooms may occur naturally associated with geomorphology and high water temperatures.
