Platja de can Villar is a semi-enclosed beach in Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona, located in a semi-urban environment on the Mediterranean coast. The beach measures 1,115 meters in length with an average width of 31 meters and covers a surface area of 34,842 square meters. It is bounded to the north by the Riera de Sant Pol and to the south by a small breakwater separating it from Platja del Farell. Summer occupancy levels are moderate.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Beach type: semi-enclosed. Average width 31 meters, length 1,115 meters, surface area 34,842 square meters. Sediment is very coarse with median grain size (D50) of 1.4 millimeters. Water entry gradient is very steep. Coastal line evolution is -0.5 meters per year. Average water temperature: June 20.3°C, July 23.5°C, August 24.1°C, September 23.0°C. Mean salinity range 37.0–38.3 psu with low continental influence. Predominant wind direction S with weak intensity. Predominant sea state: flat to rippled. Significant wave height 0.69 meters, average period 6.2 seconds, most frequent direction SSW.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological quality is assessed through analysis of faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Water quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) or Poor (not suitable for bathing) on a temporary basis, and as Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor on an annual basis using data from the previous four years.

Risks

The Riera de Sant Pol is the main source of freshwater input to the bathing area during rainfall events. The coastal area has a high hydrological response velocity index during rainy episodes. Temporary water quality advisories are issued during rainfall episodes or occasional wastewater treatment incidents.
