Platja de la Platjola i el Morer is an open beach located in Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona, within a semi-urban setting. The beach is 163–530 m long with an average width of 17–25 m and covers an area of 4553–9220 m². It has very coarse sediment and a steep water entry slope. The beach experiences medium occupancy during summer and is bounded to the north by Torrent del Morer and to the south by a breakwater separating it from Sant Pol beach.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy beach type with very coarse sediment (D50 = 1.84 mm). Water body classification: C16 Pineda de Mar-Mataró, a sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Average temperature: June 20.3°C, July 23.6°C, August 24.0°C, September 22.9°C. Salinity range: 37.0–38.5 psu. Significant wave height: 0.69 m with mean period of 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state is calm.

Location

Sant Pol de Mar, Barcelona, Maresme region, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a semi-urban coastal environment with a population of 5,102 inhabitants in the municipality.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring occurs during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological analysis is performed weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur at minimum three times weekly, assessing transparency, colour, floating solids, marine debris, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to water body C16 with low continental influence.

Risks

Torrent del Morer is the primary source of freshwater discharge, occurring intermittently during rainfall events. The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating susceptibility to rapid hydrological changes during rain episodes. Phytoplankton bloom monitoring is conducted continuously during the bathing season as a preventive measure.
