Cap de Sant Pere is an open beach in the municipality of Cambrils in the Baix Camp region of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 800 metres long with an average width of 20 metres and covers an area of 15,894 square metres. It is situated in an urban-residential setting and experiences high occupancy during summer months. The beach is bounded by Ponent de Salou to the northeast and Vilafortuny de Cambrils to the southwest.

Water

Mediterranean Sea (C29 Salou-Cambrils water body type: sandy shallow with low continental influence). Average water temperature ranges from 21.8°C in June to 25.9°C in August. Salinity ranges from 37 to 38.4 psu. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with a mean period of 5.24 seconds. Water entry gradient is moderate. Coastline erosion rate of 2.34 metres per year.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly (every Saturday) for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections are conducted a minimum of 3 times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Barranc de Barenys watercourse is the most important hydrological feature in the bathing zone. During heavy rainfall, the Reus wastewater treatment plant cannot adequately treat water volumes and untreated wastewater mixed with rainwater reaches the sea directly through the Barranc de Barenys, which discharges on the right side of the beach.

Risks

Untreated wastewater discharge during heavy rainfall events from the Barranc de Barenys watercourse due to insufficient treatment capacity at the Reus wastewater treatment plant and the emergency outfall system.
