Vilafortuny Beach is an open sandy beach in the urban-residential municipality of Cambrils in Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is 1,400 meters long with an average width of 53 meters, composed of fine sand with a steep water entry gradient. The beach has high occupancy during summer and is bordered by Cap de Sant Pere Beach to the northeast and Esquirol Beach to the southwest. The beach faces the Mediterranean Sea with a southeast orientation.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water mass C29 (Salou-Cambrils), classified as sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Surface area: 72,346 square meters. Average salinity: 37–38.5 psu. Mean water temperature: June 21.8°C, July 25.4°C, August 26°C, September 24.8°C. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height: 81 cm with average period of 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction east. Predominant winds: southeast, weak intensity. Coastal evolution: -1.45 m/year.

Location

Cambrils municipality, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in an urban-residential setting on the Catalan coast. Parking and facilities information is available at www.cambrils.org.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control occurs weekly for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly, analyzing Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Water is classified based on analytical results and published weekly.

Risks

The Barenys ravine, located approximately 950 meters north of the beach limit, discharges to the sea during heavy rainfall. During heavy rain events, the Reus wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) and its submarine emissary cannot handle the full volume of water, causing untreated effluent to bypass into the ravine and reach the sea. Several streams (Riera d'Alforja, Riera de Riudoms, Regueral) discharge to the sea during rainfall or anthropogenic discharge events in the southern part of the beach area.
