Platja de l'Esquirol is a semi-enclosed beach in Cambrils, Tarragona, located on the Catalan coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The beach has a length of 895 metres, an average width of 40 metres, and a surface area of 35,800 square metres. The beach features fine sand with a mean grain size of 0.2 mm and a steep water entry slope. The beach is situated in an urban-residential environment with high summer occupancy.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C29 (Salou-Cambrils), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.5 to 38.5 practical salinity units. Average water temperatures: June 21.7°C, July 25.4°C, August 25.9°C, September 24.8°C. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with a mean period of 5.24 seconds and predominantly easterly direction. Predominant sea state is rippled.

Location

Cambrils, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the municipality of Cambrils (population 32,855). It is open to Vilafortuny beach to the east and bordered by a breakwater to the west that delimits the Riudoms stream.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September under Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological quality is determined through analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), Sufficient, and Insufficient (not suitable for bathing).

Risks

The Riudoms stream is located approximately 30 metres south of the beach boundary, separated by a breakwater. The stream discharges into the sea during rainfall or anthropogenic discharge events. The bathing zone has a low hydrological response velocity index (VRH) rating. Emergency wastewater discharge outfalls are located near the beach as part of the Cambrils sanitation system.
