Platja de Castell is a sheltered beach located in the municipality of Palamós in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a natural protected area and is characterized by very coarse sand with a steep water entry slope. Summer occupancy of the beach is high. The beach is 339 meters long with an average width of 63 meters and covers a surface area of 22,715 square meters.

Water

Mediterranean Sea water body. Average water temperature ranges from 20.4°C in June to 23.7°C in August. Salinity range 36.6–38.4 practical salinity units. Significant wave height 0.87 meters with average period 5.55 seconds and most frequent direction NNE. Low continental influence. Coastal water mass C14 (Begur-Blanes type: deep rocky with low continental influence).

Location

The beach is located in Palamós (17,766 inhabitants), at the southernmost part of the Castell-Cap-Roig Natural Protected Area in the Baix Empordà region of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. It borders the Iberian settlement of Castell to the northeast and a rocky area to the southwest. The nearest nearby beach is Cala s'Alguer.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under the Catalan Water Agency's Beach and Coastal Waters Quality Surveillance Plan according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly with testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspections of water transparency, coloration, suspended solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The Aubi river discharges water permanently into the Castell lagoon, with occasional overflow into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall. High hydrological response velocity index during rain episodes. The area is subject to phytoplankton bloom monitoring, which is a natural phenomenon that can be frequent in summer at some beaches and typically poses no risk to swimmers unless toxic species are detected.
