Cala Estreta is a narrow, sheltered cove located in the municipality of Palamós in the Baix Empordà comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated within the protected natural area of Castell-Cap-Roig, surrounded by forest with only a few residential houses nearby. The cove measures 200 metres in length with an average width of 5 metres and a total surface area of 2,200 square metres. It is bordered to the northeast by Cala Remendon and to the southwest by cliffs, with access via a coastal footpath that connects several small coves. The beach experiences high occupancy levels.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Rocky enclosed cove belonging to water mass C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as a deep rocky type with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.8 to 38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.2 °C, July 23.4 °C, August 23.5 °C, September 22.2 °C. Predominant sea state is slightly rough with weak northwest winds. The cove does not receive any permanent or temporary water course; it only receives runoff during rainfall.

Location

Palamós, Girona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The bathing zone is located within the protected natural area of Castell-Cap-Roig.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly (every Saturday) during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly analysis is conducted during the bathing season. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The coastal area has a high hydrological response velocity index (VRH), indicating rapid water response during rainfall episodes. Phytoplankton blooms are monitored as part of a dedicated surveillance programme; most blooms are natural phenomena that form coloured patches but do not pose risks to swimmers, though toxic species are managed through specific protocols.
