Platja de la Fosca is a beach located in Palamós, a municipality with 17,766 inhabitants in the Baix Empordà comarca of Girona province, Catalonia. The beach is situated within the Fosca-mar and Santa Maria de la Fosca urbanizations, bordered to the northeast by cliffs continuing to Platja de Castell and to the southwest by the Cap Gros urban park. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months. It is a rocky cove-type beach with medium sand sediment and a steep water entry gradient.

Mediterranean Sea. Beach area: 16,461 m². Length: 514 m. Average width: 37 m. Sediment: medium sand (D50 = 0.34 mm). Water entry gradient: very steep. Coastal orientation: SSE. The beach belongs to the C14 water mass (Begur-Blanes: deep rocky type with low continental influence). Receives no natural surface water input. Mean salinity: 37.2–38.5 psu. Average water temperature: June 20.8°C, July 23.8°C, August 24.0°C, September 22.7°C. Predominant wind: weak southerly. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height: 0.87 m, mean period 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. High hydrological response index. Cyclonic general circulation with parallel coastal current.

Location

Palamós, Girona, Catalonia. Located within the Fosca-mar and Santa Maria de la Fosca urbanizations. The beach is northeast of Cap Gros urban park and approximately 2 km south of Palamós sports harbor. Access information available at the Palamós municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control: weekly. Environmental control: minimum three weekly inspections during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, color, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Monitoring is carried out weekly during the bathing season.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted during the bathing season to detect potentially toxic algal species. Hydrocarburs and other harmful substances are monitored and analyzed if detected. These are natural phenomena that may occur frequently at some beaches during summer.
