Cunit Llevant is a bathing beach in the municipality of Cunit, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. It consists of a series of small semicircular coves situated in an urban-residential setting. The beach has an average width of 50 metres, a length of 1,200 metres, and a surface area of 60,000 square metres. The summer occupancy of the beach is high. Fine sand with a mean grain size of 0.18 mm covers the beach, which has a gentle slope for water entry.

Water

The bathing zone belongs to water mass C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as a sandy shallow water mass with low continental influence. Mean water temperature ranges from 22.0°C in June to 26.3°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 35.8 to 38.4 psu. Average wave height is 74 cm with a mean period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. Predominant sea state is rippled. Water circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with a current parallel to the continental coast.

Location

The beach is located in Cunit, municipality in Baix Penedès comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the east by the Mas d'en Pere stream, which separates it from Cubelles municipality, and to the west by the other coves that make up Cunit Ponent beach.

Season

Monitoring occurs during the official bathing season from June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September according to the Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007. Quality classification is based on microbiological analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci indicators. Temporary quality classifications are expressed in three categories: Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), and Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Annual classifications covering four years of data use four categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient.

Risks

The beach is located in a coastal zone with a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index. Two watercourses discharge into the beach: the Mas d'en Pere torrent and the Cunit stream, which only reach the sea during rainfall. Temporary water quality affections can occur during rain episodes or occasionally due to sanitation system incidents.
