Platja de les Gavines is a semicircular cove located in the semi-urban municipality of Cubelles in Barcelona province, Catalonia. The beach is 250 metres long with an average width of 100 metres, featuring fine sand and a gentle water entry gradient. It is shared between the municipalities of Cubelles and Cunit, with the Mas d'en Pere stream dividing the two sections. Summer occupancy is moderate.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal bathing area classified as a shallow sandy type with low continental influence. Surface area is 25,000 square metres. Mean salinity ranges from 36.5 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 22°C, July 26°C, August 26°C, September 25°C. Significant wave height averages 0.74 metres with a mean period of 6 seconds. The predominant sea state is rippled with weak south-westerly winds.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological quality is assessed through analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci as faecal contamination indicators. Quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), or Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Annual classifications are determined from four years of data.

Risks

The Mas d'en Pere stream is the primary source of freshwater discharge, carrying water during rainfall episodes with intermittent flow. The bathing area has a high hydrological response velocity index. The Cubelles-Cunit wastewater treatment system serves the area with a principal submarine outfall located at the southern end of Platja de les Gavines, discharging treated wastewater to sea.
