Fenals Beach is located in the urban-residential area of Lloret de Mar in Girona, Catalonia, on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is an enclosed sandy beach with a mean width of 45 metres and a length of 726 metres, featuring very coarse sand. The beach is bounded to the north and south by rocky coastal sections, with the Passapera stream discharging into the central zone. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Mean water salinity ranges from 37.2 to 38.7 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.2°C, July 23.1°C, August 24.1°C, September 23.3°C. Significant wave height 0.69 m with mean period 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state is rippled. Surface area of beach: 34,296 m². Water body classification: C14 (Begur-Blanes), rocky deep type with low continental influence.

Location

Lloret de Mar municipality (37,734 inhabitants), in the La Selva region of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast in a Mediterranean location with SSE orientation.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly on Saturdays throughout 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspection conducted a minimum of 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly under Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters monitored include transparency, colour, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing water is subject to discharge from the buried Passapera stream during heavy rainfall events.

Risks

The beach receives discharge from the buried Passapera stream during heavy rainfall conditions. The area has a high hydrological response velocity index. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season as a natural phenomenon that may occur frequently in summer and can occasionally involve toxic species.
