Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with very low densities below 5,000,000 cells/l. Multiple urban discharge points and relief structures are present in the area. Contamination risk classification: Green zone (low contamination risk). Current sanitation systems in municipalities discharging urban wastewater to Santander Bay do not pose a risk to Loredo beach.

Multiple urban and relief discharge points identified along the coast. Cyanobacteria, macroalgae, and phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted.
