Heliópolis Beach is located in the municipality of Benicàssim in the province of Castellón, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach features an irregular open configuration with perpendicular breakwaters for defence and a rigid maritime promenade. It has a shoreline length of 2,873.1 metres and an average width of 78.2 metres, composed of artificial sand. The beach is situated on a low-lying coastal accumulation area with currents flowing from south to north, in a microtidal regime.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season. Classification system follows Royal Decree 1341/2007. Water quality categories assessed are: excellent, good, sufficient, and insufficient. Monitoring point established since 1987. Two direct discharge points identified: freatic drainage collector (medium risk, intermittent discharge) and relief overflow structure (low risk, sporadic discharge). Urban wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Benicàssim) treats 5,933 cubic metres per day with secondary treatment and efficiency rates of 86% for suspended solids, 86% for BOD5, and 78% for COD. Submarine outfall constructed in 1991, 3.321 kilometres long, 560 millimetres diameter.

Short-duration contamination risk factors assessed as low frequency with mild impact: rainfall, urban sanitation, and coastal discharges. Other potential contamination factors assessed as low frequency with mild impact: rivers/channels, industrial installations, port installations, and diffuse pollution. No cyanobacteria proliferation episodes detected in the region.
