Isuntza Beach is located in the municipality of Lekeitio in Bizkaia, Spain, facing the Island of San Nicolás. The beach is 250 metres long with an average width of 35 metres and is composed of fine sand. It is an urban beach with a high occupation density, good pedestrian and vehicle access, and has held ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications since 2006. The beach is partially enclosed by artificial structures including a port at its left end and the mouth of the Lea River at its right end.

Water

Transitional water body of the Lea River estuary. The beach has a surface area of 24,260 square metres at low tide and 8,380 square metres at high tide. Tidal amplitude is 4.5 metres with minimum tide of 1 metre. Water renewal is less than or equal to 7 days. Wave conditions are calm. The Lea River basin covers approximately 84 square kilometres with a maximum length of 19.4 kilometres. Average river discharge is 1.9 cubic metres per second.

Location

Located in Lekeitio municipality, Bizkaia, Spain. The Lekeitio Town Council manages the beach in cooperation with the Bizkaia Provincial Council's Environment Department. Urban parking is available, though insufficient for demand.

Water Quality

Water quality classification by Directive 2006/7/CE: 2008 = Insufficient; 2009 = Sufficient; 2010 = Good. Monitoring point PM1 is located at coordinates 540662, 4801424 in the central zone of the beach. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations are tracked. Identified pollution sources include proximity to Lekeitio port waters, Lea River waters, untreated wastewater from the rescue station, thalassotherapy discharge from the Emperatriz Hotel, and runoff from the hotel esplanade and Uribarren Park.

Risks

Environmental risks include proximity to Lekeitio port waters, Lea River waters, untreated wastewater from the rescue station, thalassotherapy discharge from the Emperatriz Hotel, and runoff from hotel and park areas. Pontual non-conformities in wastewater treatment plant operation have been detected.
