Karraspio Beach is located between the mouth of the Lea River and Punta Labaganea in the external part of the Lea transition water body, in the municipality of Mendexa, Bizkaia, Spain. The beach is 462 metres long with an average width of 20 metres, composed of fine sand and oriented towards open sea. It is a semi-urban beach with high occupancy during the summer season and is protected from the most frequent northwest waves by the outer points of Lekeitio harbour and the San Nicolás island. The beach has held ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications since 2004.

Water

Transition water body of the Lea River estuary. Length 462 metres; average width 20 metres; low tide surface area 140,380 square metres; high tide surface area 28,380 square metres. Tidal range 4.5 metres; minimum tide 1 metre. Water renewal rate of 7 days or less. Calm waters with low wave exposure. Lea River has a maximum length of 19.4 kilometres, a catchment area of approximately 84 square kilometres, and a mean discharge of 1.9 cubic metres per second.

Location

Mendexa municipality, Bizkaia province, Spain. The beach is accessible via marked ramps and stairs. Parking available with 360 spaces.

Bathing season monitoring conducted during summer months with intensive monitoring periods in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

Water Quality

Water quality classification according to Directive 2006/7/CE: PM1 sampling point classified as GOOD in 2008 and EXCELLENT in 2009 and 2010. PM2 sampling point classified as GOOD in 2009 and INSUFFICIENT in 2010. Periplayera area classified as GOOD for 2008-2010 season. Point samples show 6% INSUFFICIENT results at PM1 and 18% INSUFFICIENT results at PM2 when compared to sufficiency thresholds. Main pollution sources are treated wastewater from Lekeitio treatment plant (secondary aerobic treatment with more than 80% BOD removal and total nitrogen elimination) and untreated wastewater from some Ispaster dwellings via the Lea River.
