Platja de l'Arenal is a semi-enclosed beach located in l'Ampolla, Tarragona, Spain, within the Ebro Delta Natural Area. The beach covers 58,881 square meters with an average width of 33 meters and a length of 2,000 meters, composed of fine sand. It experiences high occupancy levels during summer months and is delimited naturally by rocks on the left end while remaining open on the right.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal beach in the Fangar Bay, classified as a bay with high continental influence. The beach has a moderate water entry slope and shows coastal line evolution of -0.93 meters per year. Salinity range: 7.2–38.3 practical salinity units. Average water temperatures: June 23.8°C, July 27.2°C, August 27°C, September 25.2°C. Predominant wave height: 81 centimeters significant wave height with 5.24 second average period. Predominant wind: northeast, weak intensity.

Location

Located in l'Ampolla (3,118 inhabitants), Baix Ebre region, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded naturally by rocks on the left end and opens to the right. The Bassa de les Olles outlet channel is situated approximately 1.5 kilometers to the right of the beach boundary.

Facilities

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental controls are conducted for 17 consecutive weeks during the bathing season, with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspections of water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant material, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The wastewater treatment system in l'Ampolla provides biological treatment with capacity of 3,200 cubic meters per day, serving 2,662 residents with equivalent population of 16,000 inhabitant-equivalents. Effluent is discharged to sea via the principal outlet at the port.

Risks

The Bassa de les Olles outlet channel, located 1 kilometer south of the bathing zone, is the primary freshwater input and its discharge is regulated by a pumping station controlled by the irrigation community. A phytoplankton monitoring program tracks potential harmful algae blooms, which are natural phenomena and frequent during summer but typically pose no risk to swimmers unless toxic species are detected.
