Platja d'Avellaners is a semi-enclosed urban beach in L'Ampolla, Tarragona, in the Baix Ebre region of Catalonia. The beach is 170 metres long with an average width of 17 metres and covers an area of 5,500 square metres. It is naturally delimited by rocks at its left end and by rocks from a breakwater at its right end. The beach experiences high occupancy levels during summer.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Semi-enclosed beach with moderate water entry gradient. Average sand grain size 0.62 mm (coarse sand). Coastal line evolution is −0.6 m per year. The beach is situated in Fangar Bay water mass (T1), which has high continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 29.6 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 22.5°C, July 26.3°C, August 26.2°C, September 24.7°C. Predominant sea state is rippled. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with average period of 5.24 seconds and most frequent direction from the east.

Location

L'Ampolla, Tarragona, Baix Ebre, Catalonia. Located in the Fangar Bay area of the Catalan coast. The beach is situated in an urban environment within the village of L'Ampolla, near the L'Ampolla sports and fishing port on the right side.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological sampling (Saturdays) and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly microbiological analysis and minimum three weekly environmental inspections are conducted during the 17-week bathing season. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored as part of an ongoing surveillance programme. Some phytoplankton species can pose health risks to swimmers and affect marine ecosystems. Most proliferations form only coloured patches in the water without risk to bathers. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances are monitored through environmental inspections.
