Playa del Arenal is a sandy beach located in Burriana, Castellón, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has a closed longitudinal configuration with perpendicular breakwaters for coastal defence and a rigid maritime promenade. It is bordered to the north by Playa de Grau-Malvarrosa and to the south by the Port of Burriana. The beach has a high density of bathers during the bathing season.

Water

Maritime coastal water body. Shoreline length 1003.6 m, average width 122.4 m. Sandy composition with natural-semi origin. Low-accumulation coastal type. Microtidal range. Current direction runs south to north. Belongs to the Júcar River Basin District, typology 1 coastal water mass with moderate status.

Location

Located in Burriana municipality, Castellón province, Valencian Community, Spain. Parking is available. Access for people with disabilities is provided.

Lifeguard and rescue services available. Public toilets free of charge. Showers and foot wash facilities. Accessible facilities. Trash bins and selective waste collection. Beach bar/chiringuito. Scooter, umbrella, and sunbed rental. Buoys and safety marking present.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during the bathing season. Quality classifications are evaluated as Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient based on visual inspection parameters and water analysis. Monitoring point located at Frente Hotel Aloha (established 1987). Potential contamination risk factors include rainfall (low frequency, mild effect), urban sanitation (low frequency, mild effect), coastal discharges (low frequency, mild effect), rivers/canals (low frequency, mild effect), industrial installations (low frequency, mild effect), port installations (low frequency, mild effect), and diffuse pollution (low frequency, mild effect).

Risks

Two direct discharge points identified: Conducción 300 m north of Camping de l'Arenal (mixed origin, medium risk, sporadic frequency) and Acequia de Finello (mixed origin, medium risk, intermittent frequency). Phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that can occur in low-renewal zones. Jellyfish proliferation is a natural phenomenon associated with coastal geomorphology, climate situations, and high water temperatures, occurring more frequently in low-renewal zones. Cyanobacteria proliferation has not been detected on the Valencian coast.
