Platja de l'Arrabassada is a sandy beach in Tarragona, Catalonia, located in a semi-urban environment and naturally bounded by rocks on both sides. The beach is 570 meters long with an average width of 63 meters and a total surface area of 36,373 square meters. It experiences high occupancy during summer months and has fine sand sediment with a moderate water entry slope.

Coastal line evolution: -2.81 m/year. Salinity range: 34.9–38.2 psu. Water temperature June 21.5°C, July 25°C, August 25.6°C, September 24.2°C. Significant wave height 74 cm with 6-second average period.

Location

Tarragona municipality in the Tarragonès county, Catalonia, Spain. Nearest city is Tarragona (140,323 inhabitants). The beach is part of the Costa Daurada region along the Mediterranean Sea.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during bathing season.

Water Quality

Water body C26 (Tarragona Nord) - sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Monitoring conducted under EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control performed weekly measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspection includes assessment of water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, algae blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Two streams reach the beach: Barranc de la Budellera and Barranc Terres Cavades. The latter discharges into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall events. The area has high hydrological response index (VRH). Emergency discharge points (emissaries) from the Altafulla wastewater treatment system are located at the beach (emergency emissary at Arrabassada, 710 m length, 22 m depth).
