Platja de la Savinosa is a sandy beach located in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 350 meters long with an average width of 33 meters and a surface area of 11,928 square meters. The beach has a semi-natural environment with fine sand sediment and is naturally bordered by rocks on both sides. Summer occupancy is moderate.

Water

The bathing area belongs to water body C26 Platja de la Savinosa, classified as a sandy shallow coastal area with low continental influence. The beach has a moderate water entry slope. Mediterranean Sea location with low hydrological response velocity index. Average water temperature: 21.5°C in June, 25°C in July, 25.7°C in August, and 24.5°C in September. Average salinity range: 35.3–38.3 psu. Predominant sea state is slight wave conditions. Significant wave height: 74 cm with mean period of 6 seconds.

Location

The beach is located in Tarragona municipality in the Tarragonès region of Catalonia, Spain. It is situated in an immediate natural environment, though residential areas exist behind the railway line that runs parallel to the coastline.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during bathing season. Microbiological control conducted weekly on Saturdays. Environmental inspection conducted minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. The bathing area receives treatment from the Altafulla wastewater treatment system, which serves Tarragona and nearby municipalities with biological treatment. Treated effluent is discharged to sea through a main submarine outfall. No freshwater input reaches this bathing area.

Risks

The barranc de les Terres Cavades (ravine), located approximately 700 meters south, can discharge to sea during heavy rainfall episodes. Environmental parameters monitored include water transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.
