Platja del Miracle is an urban beach in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, located in the Mediterranean Sea. The beach is 1,100 metres long with an average width of 24 metres and covers an area of 27,853 square metres. It is naturally bounded by rocks on both the left and right extremes, with the right side defined by the breakwater of Tarragona's sports harbour. The beach experiences moderate summer occupancy and is situated in close proximity to Tarragona's port, which serves commercial, industrial, fishing, and sports functions.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach has a steep water entry gradient. Mean salinity ranges from 35.7 to 38.2 psu. Water temperatures average 21.6°C in June, 24.9°C in July, 25.6°C in August, and 24.2°C in September. Significant wave height averages 74 centimetres with a mean period of 6 seconds and most frequent direction from the south-southwest. The area experiences moderate continental influence with weak southeasterly wind direction and rippled sea state predominance.

Location

Tarragona municipality, Tarragonès comarca, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in an urban setting adjacent to the city of Tarragona (population 140,323). The Francolí river mouth is located approximately 800 metres to the right of the beach's right boundary, within Tarragona port.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks during this period, with microbiological sampling weekly on Saturdays and environmental inspections minimum three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspection of water transparency, colouration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton discolouration, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Altafulla wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and submarine outfall at Altafulla beach, located north of this beach.

Risks

The beach is located near the Francolí river mouth (within Tarragona port approximately 800 metres away) and in proximity to a major port facility combining commercial, industrial, fishing, and sports operations. The area experiences high hydrological response velocity to rainfall events.
