Platja de l'Astillero-l'Almadrava is a semi-sheltered beach located in an urban environment in the municipality of Vilassar de Mar in the Maresme region of Barcelona, Catalonia. The beach is 1,410 metres long with an average width of 45 metres and covers an area of 63,450 square metres. It is bordered to the north by the Torrent del Porxo stream and to the south by the Garbí breakwater. The beach experiences medium-level occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean coastal waters. The beach is a semi-sheltered sandy beach with an average width of 45 metres and length of 1,410 metres. Surface area is 63,450 square metres. Mean salinity ranges from 36.7 to 38.3 psu. Mean water temperatures are 20.7°C in June, 23.8°C in July, 24.4°C in August, and 24.1°C in September. The water entry gradient is very steep. Coastal erosion occurs at a rate of 1.5 metres per year. Sediment grain size (D50) is 0.77 millimetres. Wave height (significant wave height) is 0.69 metres with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and most frequent direction SSW. Dominant sea state is rippled. Predominant winds are south direction with weak intensity.

Location

Vilassar de Mar, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 20,764 inhabitants. The beach is bordered to the north by Cabrera de Mar at the Torrent del Porxo, situated near the train station, and to the south by the Garbí breakwater.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored fortnightly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007. Monitoring focuses on faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Classifications are expressed in three temporal categories: Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) and Insufficient (unsuitable for bathing). Annual classifications based on four years of data use four categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient and Insufficient.

Risks

The Riera d'en Cintet and Riera de Cabrils streams located north and south of the beach constitute the main sources of freshwater input that discharge to the bathing zone during rainfall events. The area has a High Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating rapid hydrological response during rainfall episodes.
