Platja de Ponent is a semi-enclosed beach located in the urban municipality of Vilassar de Mar in the Maresme region of Barcelona, Catalonia. The beach stretches 1,090 meters in length with an average width of 40 meters and a surface area of 43,600 square meters. It features coarse sediment with a mean grain size of 0.77 mm and has a very steep water entry gradient. The beach experiences medium occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body classified as C17 Mataró-Montgat, a shallow sandy type with moderate continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 36.7 to 38.3 psu. Average water temperatures are 20.7°C in June, 23.8°C in July, 24.4°C in August, and 24.1°C in September. Predominant wind direction is south with weak intensity. Predominant sea state is rippled. Significant wave height averages 0.69 meters with a mean period of 6.2 seconds and most frequent direction SSW.

Location

Located in Vilassar de Mar, a municipality of 20,764 inhabitants in the Maresme region of Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the north by the Garbí breakwater at the Pescadors club and to the south by the Torrent de les Tartanes near the Mercat de la Flor. Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring includes analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci as faecal contamination indicators. Quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), Sufficient, or Insufficient (not suitable for bathing). Temporary classifications are provided biweekly during the bathing season, while annual classifications are based on data from the preceding four years.

Risks

Three streams (Riera d'en Cintet, Riera de Cabrils, and Riera de Vilassar) provide freshwater discharge during rainfall events in the northern, central, and southern parts of the beach respectively. The beach is located in an area with high hydrological response velocity. Temporary water quality impacts may occur during heavy rainfall or occasional wastewater treatment incidents.
